(Des Moines, IA) -- Polk County Conservation officials have cut the ribbon on what they're calling the most accessible outdoor recreation area in the United States. The Athene Northshore recreation area at Easter Lake on Des Moines' south side, has been a $8 million, multi-year project. The area is designed for visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors.

Devon Boes is an occupational therapist who will be doing programming at the site. She says it may be used for individual or group outings, for children and adults.

There are amenities which comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. There is an ADA-accessible pontoon boat, quiet de-escalation rooms for people with sensory issues, extra-wide concrete paths for wheelchairs and walkers, and more.

The Athene Northshore recreation area officially opens this Sunday, May 5th.
